Bhutan: The Last Himalayan Kingdom

Bhutan, a small Himalayan kingdom that sits between India and Tibet, is known to provide a unique travel experience, focusing on “Gross National Happiness” as opposed to rampant growth. The kingdom is characterized by beautiful snow-covered mountains, monasteries on cliffs, and dense valleys. Buddhism has a significant impact on the everyday life of Bhutanese residents and can be seen on their prayer flags that flutter along the road and in dzongs where monks carry out their studies. The most popular towns are Paro and Thimphu, but the main attraction is the trek to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. The number of visitors is controlled and the daily Sustainable Development Fee adds to the slow pace of travel around Bhutan.
